“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses... Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.”

Inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty, 1903

IT'S TIME TO OPEN OUR ARMS AND OUR HEARTS

WHY NOW?

  • Homelessness increased 18% from 2023 to 2024 -- an all time Point In Time (PIT) count high.

  • Seniors, young people, and families are the fastest growing housing unstable population.

  • The eyes of the world are on the United States and LA, -- a host country  of the 2026 World Cup, the host city of the 2027 Super Bowl, and the host country of the 2028 Summer Olympics.

  • The lack of permanent affordable housing, coupled with the increase in severe weather events, has created a perfect storm of urgency.

  • This year, the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary.  The Statue of Liberty, calls on us to change the narrative and see those who are homeless and experiencing housing insecurity, as the individuals as they are.

  • The time to act is now.

..AND WHY THIS STORY?

  •  The “homeless” are predominantly veterans, single mothers with children, youth, and people who suffer from mental illness. 30% of them live in California.

  • Record numbers of people are living in vehicles, abandoned structures, shelters, and on the streets. The 2024 Point In Time Count, recorded over 45,000 people are homeless in the City of Los Angeles

  • More than half those experiencing homelessness are in four states: California, Washington, New York, and Florida.

  • The affordable housing crisis has mobilized government agencies, nonprofit organizations, corporations, and individuals.
